The false dichotomy of systemic vs individual behaviour changes in solving the climate crisis
The Ethinvest team are big fans of data-focused climate researcher Hanna Richie, whose book Not the End of the World: How We Can Be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet, that we recently featured in Hunter Gatherer. In her latest blog, she looks at the false dichotomy of systemic and individual behaviour change and why individual action is still an important part of the system that will get us there.
In her blog, Richie explores the often-polarising debate about who is “responsible” for climate change, and ultimately, who should fix it - “systemic change” thinkers tend to put the focus on big corporations, governments and economic systems vs those who focus on their "individual" impact via everything from flying and cars to the amount of meat eaten and energy use. Richie says the debate between the two are actually a false binary. It’s not one or the other, she says, it’s both.
A great read from an important thinker and writer on the global climate change challenge.
