This month's good news: Important melanoma breakthrough
For decades, melanoma has been among the most feared forms of skin cancer, particularly in Australia, where rates are among the highest in the world. Now, new breakthrough melanoma treatment tailored to individual patients has delivered a global dose of optimism, with researchers reporting that an experimental vaccine can significantly reduce the risk of the disease returning after surgery.
The treatment, known as intismeran autogene, uses the same mRNA technology that powered some of the world's most successful COVID-19 vaccines. Developed by Moderna and Merck, the therapy is designed from a sample of each patient's tumour, creating a personalised treatment that teaches the immune system to recognise and attack any lingering cancer cells.
In a phase 3 trial involving more than 1,100 patients, those who received the vaccine alongside an immunotherapy drug were less likely to see their melanoma return or spread to other organs than those who received standard treatment alone. The results mark the first time an mRNA-based cancer therapy has shown success in a large late-stage clinical trial.
Professor Georgina Long, medical director of Melanoma Institute Australia and the study's principal investigator, called the findings a "landmark moment" in the fight against melanoma. She said the treatment had the potential to keep patients cancer-free for longer and could reshape the way the disease is managed after surgery.
The breakthrough offers hope well beyond melanoma. Researchers are already studying the technology in lung, bladder and kidney cancers, raising the prospect of a new generation of personalised cancer vaccines. For patients facing one of the world's deadliest skin cancers, the results suggest that a future once imagined in science fiction may be moving rapidly into everyday medicine.
