New green steel project in Newcastle offers hope for renewable energy manufacturing in Australia

More than a quarter-century after the last blast furnace fell silent in Newcastle, steelmaking is set to return to the city in a dramatically different form. GreenSteel Australia has committed AUD $500 million to build an electric steel mill on the site of the former BHP steelworks, a project that promises to revive one of Australia's historic industrial centres while replacing coal-fired production with renewable-powered manufacturing.
The facility, expected to begin operations in 2028, will use electric arc furnace technology to recycle scrap steel rather than produce steel from iron ore and coking coal. The plant is designed to manufacture up to 600,000 tonnes of long steel products each year—materials used in construction, infrastructure and manufacturing—and is expected to create hundreds of construction jobs and around 350 permanent positions once operational.
For Newcastle, the announcement carries significance beyond economics. The closure of BHP's steelworks in 1999 marked the end of an era for a city whose identity had been intertwined with steelmaking for nearly a century. Now, the same site is poised to become a symbol of Australia's industrial transition, demonstrating how regions built on fossil fuels can find new opportunities in the low-carbon economy.
Unlike traditional steel mills, the new plant will rely on electricity rather than coke-fired blast furnaces, dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Company executives say the project has been designed to take advantage of the Hunter region's growing renewable energy capacity and abundant supply of recycled steel, positioning Australia to meet rising demand for lower-emissions construction materials.
The investment also reflects a broader shift reshaping global manufacturing. Governments and major construction companies are increasingly seeking "green steel" as they work to reduce emissions embedded in buildings, bridges and infrastructure. Australia, one of the world's largest exporters of iron ore, has long been viewed as having the resources to become a leading producer of low-carbon metals rather than simply exporting raw materials.
Industry leaders welcomed the project as evidence that advanced manufacturing can once again flourish in Australia. The combination of recycled steel, renewable electricity and modern electric furnaces is expected to produce steel with a fraction of the emissions of conventional production while strengthening domestic supply chains.
For workers in the Hunter Valley, where coal-fired power stations are gradually closing, the development offers a hopeful example of economic transition rather than industrial decline.
