Australia marked a significant electric-vehicle milestone in June, as battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles claimed over 10% of new car sales for the first time. Analysts say this reflects rapidly increasing consumer interest, largely driven by expanding model ranges such as China’s BYD and Geely cars, and a rebound in Tesla sales. In recent years, the transition to electric vehicles has become more than just a trend; it is a clear movement towards a more sustainable way of driving.

Recent data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) shows that Australia sold 13,169 battery electric vehicles in June, delivering a record market share of 10.3%. This is a notable increase from 9.2% in May and 8.3% the same month last year, indicating a robust year-on-year growth.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles also played a significant role, with 6,200 vehicles sold in June. Remarkably, nearly half of those sales were driven by the BYD Shark 6 Ute, with BYD’s Sealion 7 also selling well. The total share of plug-in vehicles was 15.2% in June.

The latest surge in EVs has been driven by more competition than ever before, with Chinese brands having price decreases across multiple EV models due to EOFY specials.

The best-selling EVs in June 2025 according to The Driven were the Tesla Model Y (3,457 sales), BYD Sealion 7 (1,795 sales), Tesla Model 3 (1,132 sales) and Geely EX5 (822 sales). Other brands like Kia, MG, and Polestar also saw increased sales.

As Australia passes this symbolic 10% threshold, the country edges closer to targets set by governments and the industry. Maintaining momentum will require continued support for charging infrastructure, consumer incentives and a more balanced regulatory approach to ensure the transition benefits both buyers and sellers.
