Australian charity, Men’s Table, an intentional organisation helping men find mental, emotional and social wellbeing through mutual support, just launched its 250th Table nationally since it's founding as a charity seven years ago. From suicide prevention and healthy masculinity to advocating for meaningful male friendships and connecting men to their communities, the growth of the Men’s Table comes as more Australians than ever, particularly men, feel alienated or disconnected from society.
The first Men’s Table began in 2011 with 12 men who have met once a month for dinner ever since. The vision of founders is to advocate for Healthy Men, Healthy Masculinities, Healthy Communities. Their approach helps men build meaningful male friendships and connection by creating safe places to share, overcoming the stigma that “men don’t talk.”
Each Men’s Table around Australia is distinct and has its own personality, guided by the organisation’s fundamentals. These are practical guidelines drawn from the experience of existing Tables. All Tables are supported by the Kitchen (central office) of The Men’s Table, a registered not for profit organisation formed in 2019 by co-founders Ben Hughes and David Pointon, both members of that first Table.
Hear from Men’s Table founder Ben Hughes about why a group of men decided to have dinner with the intention of having a place to connect with other men and talk about the highs and lows of their lives and how that led to setting up Men’s Table nationally in his interview with ABC News Breakfast here.
You can make a tax deductible donation to support the Men’s Table via the organisation’s donor page or contact organisers for more information.
