Labor Government confirms new environmental protection agency to enforce conservation laws

Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek announced her government’s commitment to establishing a new environment protection agency with powers to decide whether developments proceed and to enforce laws designed to protect and restore nature.

Environmental organisations largely welcomed the announcement but Australian Conservation Foundation CEO Kelly O’Shanassy called out the government’s failure to include a climate trigger to the proposed law saying it allows the climate impacts of coal and gas to continue to be ignored.
